Fropm Brittonia 40(4): 362, 1988 (publ. Euphorbia aaron-rossii A. H. Holmgren & N. H. Holmgren):
We are pleased to name this unusual Euphorbia after its discoverer, Dr. Aaron
B. Ross (1917-1973), a highly regarded physician of Ogden, Utah, who was an
avid boatman and naturalist. He was fascinated by the geology, birds, and plants
of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. Over the years he brought plant
specimens he had difficulty identifying to the Utah State University Intermountain
Herbarium for positive identification by the senior author. When he brought this
spurge in, the senior Holmgren considered it to be very unusual and an unnamed
species. Dr. Ross was so enthusiastic about furthering the plant study of the Grand
Canyon that he made possible three boat trips on which the four Holmgrens made
extensive collections involving many stops and investigative hikes along the river
and up the tributary canyons draining into the Grand Canyon.
