    Biography
French missionary who collected plants in China. Edouard-Ernest Maire was Pro Vicar Apostolic of Yunnan. From about 1905-1916 he sent herbarium material to various botanical institutions in Europe. He also collected seed from time to time. Most of his collecting was done in the vicinity of Yunnan-fu (Kunming), on the plateaus surrounding the capital, but he also made trips to Tong-chuan (Dongchuan) to the north-east, where limestone hills rise to more than 10,000 feet. Nomocharis mairei H.Lév. is named after him.
