  Árbol de hojas caducas de 15 a 20 pies de alto y 4 a 6 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Tiene copa redondeada, follaje espeso, flores pequeñas blanco verdoso o amarillo pálido y cápsulas redondeadas que al abrir muestran las semillas de color rojo anaranjado. Es planta melífera. La madera se ha usado para postes y como combustible. La infusión de las hojas, flores y raíces ha servido como emenagogo y abortivo, las hojas para el control de enfermedades de la piel. Las ramas tiernas tienen propiedades repelentes de insectos. Habita en zonas áridas de Puerto Rico y la Isla de Vieques. Está distribuido en las Antillas Mayores, Islas Vírgenes, México y parte del territorio de América del Sur. Tree of caduceus leaves of fifteen or 20 feet of height and 4 to 6 inches of diameter in the trunk. It has round canopy, thick foliage, white greenish or pale yellow small flowers, and round capsules that when opening shows the seeds of red orange color. It is a melliferous plant. The wood has been used for posts and fuel. An infusion of the leaves, flowers and roots has been used to induce menstruation and abortions. The leaves are used to control skin diseases. The tender branches have insect repellant properties. It lives in the barren zones of Puerto Rico and the Island of Vieques. It is distributed in the Antilles Greater, Virgin Islands, Mexico, and part of the territory of South America.
