  Arbusto de 8 a 20 pies de alto y 4 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Se distingue por su fruto rojo carnoso redondeado levemente agrio comestible. Es una de las fuentes más ricas en vitamina C. De la pulpa prensada del fruto seco se hacen píldoras de esta vitamina. Las propiedades astringentes de los frutos se emplean para el tratamiento de la diarrea. Se cultiva como árbol frutal en huertos caseros. Está distribuido en las Antillas, México, América Central y norte de América del Sur.
