  Árbol siempre verde que alcanza 30 a 50 pies de altura y 6 a 18 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Se reconoce por sus flores grandes extendidas, hojas acorazonadas y frutos verdes redondos. La madera muy dura y parecida a la madera de la caoba se ha utilizado para hacer muebles, instrumentos musicales y postes. El Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales y Fideicomiso de Conservación propagan esta especie para fines de reforestación y ornato. Es oriundo de los bosques calizos húmedos de Puerto Rico. Se ha cultivado en Saint Thomas, las Antillas Mayores, Florida y Honduras. Evergreen tree that reach thirty to five feet of height and six to eighteen inches of diameter in the trunk. It is characterized by its large flowers, extended heart shaped leaves, and green round fruits. The wood, very hard similar to mahogany, has been used to make furniture, musical instruments, and posts. Puerto Rico's Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and Conservation Trust propagate this species to be used for reforestation and ornate. It is native of the humid limestone forests of Puerto Rico. It has been cultivated in Saint Thomas, the Greater Antilles, Florida, and Honduras.
