  Árbol siempre verde que puede medir de 10 a 20 pies de altura y 6 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco que se distingue por ser corto y torcido. Posee copa ancha, hojas acorazonadas y flores grandes amarillas en forma de embudo. Es planta melífera. La madera se ha usado como combustible y la corteza para hacer cordeles, tejer sogas, redes de pescar, telas gruesas y para amarrar plantas de tabaco. La corteza es comestible. Se ha usado en la medicina casera para el control de hemorroides, como laxante y emoliente. Se siembra como árbol ornamental. Crece silvestre en áreas pantanosas de la base de las montañas en Puerto Rico y las Islas de Mona y Vieques. Está distribuido en las playas tropicales del Mundo. Evergreen tree that can measure ten to twenty eight feet and six inches of diameter in the trunk, that is characterized to be short and twisted.
