  Árbol siempre verde que puede alcanzar de 15 a 25 pies de alto y 10 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Se distingue por tener copa amplia, tronco torcido, follaje nuevo color rojo mohoso, flores amarillas en racimos y frutos amarillos redondeados comestibles jugosos pero agrios. Es planta melífera. La madera se ha usado para la construcción, la corteza para curtir y en remedios caseros como expectorante y contra la bronquitis. Podría ser útil como árbol ornamental. Esta especie crece naturalmente en los bosques de las zonas de serpentina y base de la Cordillera Central en el suroeste y oeste de Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en algunas islas de las Antillas Mayores, Menores y desde México hasta una sección del territorio de América del Sur. Evergreen tree that can reach to of fifteen to five feet of height and ten inches of diameter in the trunk. It is characterized for an ample canopy, twisted trunk, rusty red color new foliage, yellow flowers in racemes, and yellow round edible juicy but bitter fruits. It is a plant a melliferous. The wood has been used for construction, the crust for tanning and in homemade remedies like an expectorant and to control bronchitis. It could be used like an ornamental tree. This species grows naturally in the forests of zones of serpentine and at the base of the Central Mountain range in the Southwest and the West of Puerto Rico. It is distributed in some islands of the Greater and Lesser Antilles and from Mexico to a section of the territory of South America.
