  Árbol siempre verde de 30 a 60 pies de altura y 18 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Posee copa amplia, flores amarillas vistosas y frutos amarillos redondeados comestibles pero de sabor amargo. La madera se ha utilizado para la construcción y la corteza para curtir. Las raíces, corteza y frutos se han usado como astringente en heridas, control de diarrea y disentería. Los viveros del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales y Fideicomiso de Conservación propagan esta especie como árbol de sombra y ornato. Es común en los bosques secundarios y tierras degradadas por el cultivo en la base de las montañas, zonas húmedas de la costa y calizas de Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en las Antillas Mayores, Menores y parte de territorio de América Central y del Sur. Evergreen tree of thirty to sixty feet of height and eighteen inches of diameter in the trunk. It has an ample canopy, yellow attractive flowers, and yellow round edible fruits, of bitter flavor. The wood has been used for construction and its crust for tanning. The roots, crust, and fruits have been used as an astringent in wounds, for the control of diarrhea and dysentery. The breeding grounds of the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and Conservation Trust propagate this species as a tree for shade and ornate. It is common in the secondary forests and degraded soils due to cultivation at the base of mountains, the humid calcareous zones of the coast of Puerto Rico. It is distributed in the Greater and Lesser Antilles and part of territory of Central America and the South.
