  Planta con flores rojas salpicadas de amarillo, semillas negras duras redondas en cápsulas del mismo color y tallos subterráneos engrosados o rizomas. Las pepitas secas se usan en la "maraca", instrumento musical típico de la Isla. Crece silvestre en campos, riberas de ríos, bordes de bosques y zonas húmedas de Puerto Rico. Está distribuida en las Indias Occidentales, América Central, Asia y África. Plants with red flowers, splashed with yellow, black hard round seeds in capsules of the same color; and underground-thickened stems or rhizomes. The dry nuggets are used in the "maraca", typical musical instrument of the Island. It grows wild in fields, along shores of rivers, edges of forests and in humid zones of Puerto Rico. It is distributed in the West Indies, Central America, Asia, and Africa.
