  Arbusto de quince pies de altura y 4 pies de diámetro en el tronco. Se caracteriza por tener espinas, copa abierta bien ramificada, follaje ralo colgante, flores fragantes llamativas amarillo dorado y semillas en vainas. La madera ha sido usada como combustible, para cercas y cerca viva. El follaje y las vainas han servido de forraje para el ganado. La infusión de cualquier parte de la planta ha sido útil en la medicina casera como febrífugo, diaforético, abortivo y contra la epilepsia. En ocasiones se siembra como árbol ornamental. Es común en la costa seca de Puerto Rico y la Isla de Vieques. Esta especie nativa de Texas, Arizona y México está distribuida por las Antillas, América Tropical, el Viejo Mundo y desde el sur de Estados Unidos hasta el sur de Argentina. Shrub of fifteen feet of height and four feet of diameter in the trunk. It is characterized by thorns, a ramified opened canopy, hanging scarce foliage, fragrant golden yellow attractive flowers, and seeds in pods. The wood has been used like fuel, fences, and hedges. The foliage and the pods have served as forage for cattle. The infusion of any part of the plant has been useful in home remedies to control fevers and epilepsy, promote sweating, and as an abortive. In occasions, it is used as an ornamental tree. It is common in the dry coast of Puerto Rico and the Island of Vieques. This species, native of Texas, Arizona and Mexico, it is distributed on the Antilles, Tropical America, the Old World and from the South of the United States to the South of Argentina.
