  Arbusto ramificado siempre verde de tres pies de altura y flores de color púrpura en mazos. Las hojas contienen propiedades demulcentes y diuréticas que han servido para aliviar el catarro y las úlceras gástricas. Las semillas son tóxicas al ser humano. Se cultiva en huertos como planta medicinal. Crece silvestre en colinas de elevaciones medias y bajas de Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en Florida, las Indias Occidentales y América Tropical.
