  Árbol siempre verde que puede medir 50 pies de alto y 3 pies de diámetro en el tronco. Posee hojas lustrosas localizadas en el tope de una copa muy ramificada, flores pequeñas, blancuzcas, apiñadas en racimos y frutos ovados color rosa o rojo. La madera ha sido utilizada para combustible. La corteza de la base del tronco ha servido en remedios caseros para contener las hemorragias. En Puerto Rico, el palo colorado crece silvestre en las montañas más altas de la Sierra de Luquillo. La cotorra puertorriqueña, especie en vías de extinción, hace sus nidos en los huecos del tronco de este árbol. Está distribuido en el sureste de Estados Unidos, las Antillas, el sur de México y el norte de América del Sur. Evergreen tree that can measure up to fifty feet of height and three feet of diameter in the trunk. It has bright leaves located in the top of a ramified canopy with small whitish flowers, crowded together racemes; and ovoid fruits pink or red color. The wood has been used for fuel. The bark of the base of the trunk has served in home remedies to control hemorrhages. In Puerto Rico, it grows wild in the highest mountains of the Mountain range of Luquillo. The Puerto Rican parrot, an endangered species close to extinction, makes its nests in the hollows of the trunk of this tree. It is distributed in Southeastern United States, the Antilles, the south of Mexico and the north of South America.
