Thickets, roadsides, sometimes on limestone or serpentine barrens, from sea level up to 700(-1050) m, widespread and locally abundant over Hispaniola w. ward from a line drawn through Dominican Republic between San Juan and Puerto Plata.—Fl. abundantly IX-III, sporadically through the year.—Early cultivated on Guadeloupe (Basseterre, P, hb. Richard.) and from mid-XVII cent, in w. Europe.
