  • Description

    Pedra Talhada Biological Reserve, Alagoas/Pernambuco

The Pedra Talhada Biological Reserve (08°50´S, 35°55’W), in the município of Quebrangulo, is one of the few examples of submontane forest remaining north of Bahia. A federal reserve of almost 4500 ha (11,250 acres), it has been overlooked as a research site and is home to several critically endangered bird species (e.g., Curaeus forbesi, Myrmeciza ruficauda, Phylloscartes ceciliae, Synallaxis infuscate, Terenura sicki, and Xipholena atropurpurea). The forest is well-preserved, but suffers from hunting and logging, especially in the northern half of the Reserve. In addition, there has been an additional trip to a nearby area, the tabuleiro forest reserves of the Usina Coruripe (Fazendas Capiatã and Progresso).

Coordinating Institution: The Institute for the Environment of the State of Alagoas (Instituto do Meio Ambiente), led by Rosângela Pereira de Lyra Lemos. Her team consists of students from the Federal University of Alagoas, a woodsman and an assistant.
