Description
Serra do Brejo Novo, Bahia
The Serra do Brejo Novo (13°57’S, 40°06’45"W) is an area of moist or semi-deciduous forest in the município of Jequié, at the western edge of the Atlantic coastal region in Bahia. The forest is privately owned and, as of now, has no formal conservation status – a potential problem as it is within walking distance of the city of Jequié (population over 180,000). It is remarkable because it is a moist forest surrounded by caatinga (xeric thorn scrub), the vegetation typical of Bahia’s dry interior.
Coordinating University: The State University of Southern Bahia in Jequié, led by Dr. Guadalupe Edilma Licona de Macedo. The UESB team includes a laboratory assistant, a woodsman, four students, and a representative of the NGO Grupo Ecológico Rio de Contas.
