  Arbusto elegante siempre verde de 6 a 10 pies de alto y 3 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Se distingue por el tinte rojizo o rosado de varias estructuras, flores estrechas erectas tubulares de color rojo anaranjado a escarlata en el lado superior de una rama bifurcada y frutos rojo oscuro o negruzco en bayas jugosas. Las hojas y frutos han servido contra las enfermedades de la piel, sarna, viruela, etc. El jugo de los frutos se ha usado contra la disentería. Los frutos agrios pueden ser comestibles. Los tallos y hojas han servido para curtir cueros. Por sus flores vistosas podría cultivarse como planta ornamental. Es poco común en malezas, colinas húmedas, zonas abiertas y bajas de la Cordillera Central en Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en las Antillas y América Tropical. Elegant evergreen shrub of six to 10 feet of height and 3 inches of diameter in the trunk. It is characterized by the reddish or pink hue of several tubular structures, straight narrow flowers of orange red to scarlet color in the upper side of a bifurcated branch, and dark red or blackish fruits in juicy berries. The leaves and fruits have been used against skin ailments, scabies, smallpox, etc. The juice of fruits has been used against dysentery. The bitter fruits can be edible. The stems and the leaves have served to tan leathers. For its attractive flowers, it could be cultivated as an ornamental plant. It is uncommon, found in the open zones and thickets in humid hills and low zones of the Central Mountain range in Puerto Rico. It is distributed in the Antilles and Tropical America.
