  Arbusto perenne de 3 pies de altura con hojas ovadas puntiagudas arrugadas, flores blancas solitarias en forma de copa en cimas y frutos rojos, verdes o amarillos picantes con semillas aplastadas. La fruta contiene compuestos orgánicos que hacen estornudar, sirven como rubefaciente, contra los gases intestinales y como condimento. Esta especie se cultiva en huertos caseros para hacer pique criollo con el fruto picante. Crece silvestre en bosques, montes, campos y colinas en elevaciones medias y bajas de Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en las Antillas, América Tropical y trópicos del Viejo Mundo. Perennial shrub of 3 feet of height. It has wrinkled pointed ovate leaves, solitary white flowers in shape of a cup in sharp summits, and green or yellow fruits red with flat seeds. The fruit contains organic compounds that induce sneezing, act like a rubefacient, control intestinal gases, and like a condiment. This species is cultivated in home orchards to make Creole condiment with the spicy hot fruit. It grows wild in forests, mounts, fields, and hills at medium and low elevations of Puerto Rico. It is distributed in the Antilles, Tropical America, and the Tropics of the Old one World.
