  Árbol siempre verde de 10 a 40 pies de alto y un de diámetro en el tronco. Se distingue por los pecíolos rosados o anaranjados de las hojas, racimos angostos de flores blancas pequeñas fragantes, frutos redondos lustrosos castaño rojizo o negros y corteza agrietada que se desprende en tiras largas. Es planta melífera. Los frutos carnosos y dulces pueden ser comestibles. Se ha cultivado a lo largo de carreteras, cercas y jardines como árbol ornamental. Crece en bosques costeros, calizos y la base de las montañas de Puerto Rico y las Islas de Desecheo, Icacos, Culebra y Vieques. Está distribuido en las Antillas, Florida y norte de América del Sur. Evergreen tree of 10 to 40 feet of height and of diameter in the trunk .It is distinguished by the pink or orange petioles of the leaves, narrow mallets of fragrant small white flowers, shiny reddish chestnut or black round fruits, and cracked crust that sheds off in long strips. It is a melliferous plant. The sweet fleshy fruits are edible. It has been cultivated along highways, in fences and gardens like an ornamental tree. It grows in the coastal and calcareous forests at the base of mountains of Puerto Rico and the Islands of Desecheo, Icacos, Culebra, and Vieques. It is distributed in the Antilles, Florida, and North of South America.
