  Arbusto siempre verde de 15 pies de altura y 3 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Se identifica por follaje verde lustroso, flores de corolas blancas con lóbulos virados hacia atrás apiñadas en la base de las hojas y bayas negras. La fragancia de las flores de esta planta puede producir irritación de la nariz y garganta, nauseas, mareos y dolor de cabeza. Los alcaloides de las hojas pueden producir síntomas tóxicos como alucinaciones, irritabilidad nerviosa y muscular, taquicardia, fiebre, salivación y parálisis. Es común en jardines, a orillas de carreteras, verjas y zonas húmedas en elevaciones bajas y medias de Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en las Antillas, América Tropical y desde México hasta América del Sur. Evergreen shrub of 15 feet of height and 3 inches of diameter in the trunk. It is identified by the shiny green foliage, flowers of white corolla with lobes bent backwards clustered at the base of the leaves, and black berries. The fragrance of the flowers can produce irritation of the nose and throat, nausea, dizziness, and headaches. The alkaloids of the leaves can produce toxic symptoms like hallucinations, nervous and muscular irritability, tachycardia, fever, salivation and paralysis. It is common in gardens, fences, and along borders of highways at low and medium elevations in the humid zones of Puerto Rico. It is distributed in the Antilles, Tropical America and from Mexico to South America.
