  Cactus que crece en colonias distinguido por las espinas largas agudas de color amarillo rojizo, flores amarillas y frutos rojos periformes comestibles. La fruta al exprimirse produce una tinta roja que se ha usado para teñir. Crece en regiones arenosas, rocosas y áridas de la costa sur y noreste de Puerto Rico y las Islas de Mona, Desecheo, Icacos y Vieques. Está distribuido en las Antillas, México, América Central, Carolina del Sur y norte de América del Sur. Cactus that grows in colonies distinguished by the acute long thorns of reddish yellow color, yellow flowers, and pear shaped edible red fruits. The squeezed fruit produces a red ink that has been used as a dye. It grows in sandy, rocky, and barren regions of the South and Northeast coast of Puerto Rico and the Islands of Mona, Desecheo, Icacos, and Vieques. It is distributed in the Antilles, Mexico, Central America, South Carolina, and the North of South America.
