  Planta trepadora con hojas alternas carnosas lanceoladas, flores en ramilletes de color verde amarilloso y frutos en cápsulas alargadas carnosas con semillas elongadas en el interior. El fruto de la vainilla se somete a un proceso industrial del cual se obtiene un compuesto aromático, la vainillina. Ésta se usa en infusión para estimular la digestión y la confección de medicinas y alimentos. Es nativa de América del Sur y cultivada ocasionalmente en Puerto Rico. Climbing plant with alternating fleshy lance shaped leaves, flowers in racemes of yellowish green color, and fruits in fleshy extended capsules with elongated seeds in the interior. The fruit of vanilla is used in an industrial process from which is obtained an aromatic compound, vanillin. Its infusion is used to stimulate digestion and for the confection of medicines and foods. It is native of South America and cultivated only occasionally in Puerto Rico.
