  Planta herbácea carnosa de follaje verde oscuro, flores rosadas blancas o rojas que abren a las cuatro de la tarde y frutos negros arrugados con costillas. La infusión de las raíces tuberosas se ha empleado como purgante, el zumo de las flores exprimidas contra el dolor de oídos, herpes y para eliminar las pecas de la cara. De la fruta pulverizada se obtiene un almidón fino y suave que en la antigüedad se usaba como secante y refrescante para el cutis femenino. Se ha cultivado como planta ornamental. Abunda en pastizales y terrenos abandonados después de cultivados en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes. Esta especie es nativa de América del Sur y está distribuida en los trópicos y subtrópicos del Mundo. Fleshy herbaceous plant of dark green foliage, white pink or red flowers that open at four in the afternoon, and coarse black fruit with ribs. The infusion of the tubers roots has been used as a laxative. The juice of the crushed flowers used to ail ear pain, herpes, and to eliminate freckles from the face. Of the pulverized fruit, a fine and smooth starch is obtained that in the past was used like a siccative and freshener for the feminine skin. It has been cultivated as an ornamental plant. It abounds in thickets and areas fallow after cultivation in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. This species is native of South America and is distributed in the tropics and subtropics of the World.
