  Árbol caduco de 30 pies de alto y 2 pies diámetro en el tronco. Se distingue por los troncos cortos torcidos, copa rala extendida, flores fragantes amarillas en racimos vistosos y vainas delgadas. Es planta melífera. La madera se ha usado en la ebanistería y para postes. De la viruta del duramen se obtiene un tinte que durante siglos se exportó a Europa para utilizarse en la industria del tejido. La infusión de pedazos de la madera del corazón ha servido para controlar diarreas. Se siembra ocasionalmente en verjas y como árbol ornamental. Esta especie se ha naturalizado en las zonas secas del sur y suroeste de Puerto Rico y la Isla de Mona. Nativa de México está distribuida por cultivo en las Antillas. Caduceus tree of thirty feet of height and two feet of diameter in the trunk. It is characterized by twisted short trunks, thin extended canopy, attractive fragrant yellow flowers in racemes, and thin pods. It is a melliferous plant. The wood has been used in furniture and posts. From the shavings of the interior a dye is obtained that for centuries, was exported to Europe to be used in cloth industries. The infusion of pieces of heart wood has been used to control diarrheas. It occasionally planted for fences and used as an ornamental tree. This species has naturalized in the dry zones of the South and Southwest of Puerto Rico and the Island of Mona. A native of Mexico is distributed by cultivation in the Antilles.
