  Árbol siempre verde o caduco de 45 pies de alto y un pie de diámetro en el tronco. Este árbol raro se caracteriza por los racimos florales grandes colgantes de pétalos redondeados purpúreos y vainas grandes cilíndricas. La pulpa de esta fruta se ha usado como laxante. Se siembra ocasionalmente como ornamental en las carreteras de Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en las Antillas, México, América Central y norte de América del Sur. Evergreen or caduceus tree of forty-five feet of height and a foot of diameter in the trunk. This rare tree is characterized by large hanging floral raceme with round flowers of purple petals, and large cylindrical pods. The pulp of its fruit has been used as a laxative. It is occasionally used like an ornamental along the highways of Puerto Rico. It is distributed in the Antilles, Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America.
