  Árbol de hojas caducas de 20 pies de alto y 8 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Se distingue por tener ramas espinosas, hojas con espinas en el ápice, flores abundantes llamativas amarillo brillante y vainas de color castaño estrechas achatadas. La madera del tachuelo dura, pesada y durable es usada para postes de cercas y en ocasiones para postes vivos. Podría usarse como árbol ornamental para zonas secas. Es común en áreas secas y calizas de Puerto Rico y las Islas de Culebra y Vieques. Está distribuido en las Antillas Menores y La Española. Tree of caduceus leaves of twenty feet of height and eight inches of diameter in the trunk. It is distinguished for thorny branches, abundant attractive leaves also with thorns in the apex, shining yellow flowers, and narrow and flattened pods of brown color. The wood of "tachuelo" is hard, heavy, and durable. It is used for posts of fences and occasionally for hedges. It could be used as an ornamental tree for dry areas. It is common in dry calcareous areas of Puerto Rico and the Islands of Culebra and Vieques. It is distributed in the Lesser Antilles and Hispaniola.
