  Árbol que alcanza 30 pies de altura y 8 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Se caracteriza por tener copa extendida, numerosas flores púrpuras parecidas a guisantes y vainas planas finas de color castaño claro. Es planta melífera. La madera de la retama es usada para combustible y postes de cercas. Las raíces y frutos tienen propiedades insecticidas. Puede ser cultivado como árbol ornamental. Crece en riberas de ríos, montes húmedos del litoral, zona caliza y base de las montañas de Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en las Antillas, México, América Central y parte del territorio suramericano. Tree that reaches thirty feet of height and eight inches of diameter in the trunk. It is characterized for an extended canopy, numerous purple flowers similar to that of peas, and slim flat pods of clear brown color. It is a melliferous plant. The wood of "retama" is used for fuel and posts of fences. The roots and fruit have insecticide properties. It can be cultivated like an ornamental tree. It grows along the shores of the rivers, in humid mounts of the coast, in the calcareous zone, and at the base of mountains of Puerto Rico. It is distributed in the Antilles, Mexico, Central America, and part of the South American territory.
