  Sterile stems of Huperzia lucidula based on S. A. Mori & M. Rothman 28167 from the Westchester Wilderness Walk/Zofnass Family Preserve. The non-green part of the plant grows parallel to the ground under humus (upper right corner) whereas the green part turns upward and away from the ground (the rest of the stem).
