Description
Needles ripped from stem of Picea glauca based on S. A. Mori & M. Rothman 27962 from the Westchester Wilderness Walk/Zofnass Family Preserve, Westchester Co., New York. Note the stem tissue attached to the needle. In addition, the needles are angular in cross section and, thus, can be rolled between the thumb and forefinger. These two features help separate species of spruce from species of fir, the latter does not have attached stem tissue when a needle is pulled from the stem. In addition, the needles of a fir are flat in cross section and, thus, are not easily rolled between the thumb and forefinger.
