  Bud scales and stipules of Carpinus caroliniana based on Mori 27894 from the Westchester Wilderness Walk/Zofnass Family Preserve, Westchester Co., New York. This photograph made on 6 May 2015 which was three days later than the male catkins were observed. The herbarium specimen was made when the female catkins were observed, the male catkins were spent, and the leaves were flushed. The leaf scales are brown at the apices and the sipules are oblong.
