  Stem with female catkin of Carpinus caroliniana based on Mori 27894 from the Westchester Wilderness Walk/Zofnass Family Preserve, Westchester Co., New York. This photograph was made on 6 May 2015 which was three days later than the male catkins were observed. The herbarium specimen was made when the female catkins were flowering, the leaves were flushing, and the male catkins were spent. The female catkins are barely visible at the apex of the stem.
