    Family Description - Fls hypogynous, regular or more often slightly irregular, perfect or more often functionally unisexual; sep 4 or 5, usually imbricate; pet mostly 4 or 5 (seldom wanting), distinct, imbricate, often clawed, often with an internal, scale-like appendage near the base; stamens 4–10, often 8, apparently in a single cycle, seated acropetally to (or upon) the annular or unilateral nectary-disk; filaments often hairy; ovary (2)3(–6)-carpellate, generally plurilocular; ovules apotropous, 1 or less often 2 (seldom several) per locule, typically ascending; seeds often arillate; embryo curved, often with plicate or twisted cotyledons, the radicle often folded into a pocket in the seed-coat; endosperm wanting; shrubs or trees or less often herbs or vines, with alternate, pinnately or ternately compound, mostly exstipulate lvs and small fls in mostly cymose-paniculate infls. 140/1500, mostly trop. and subtrop.
