Description
Species Description - Shrub or small tree to 10 m; lvs leathery, evergreen, oblong-obovate, 1–2 dm, abruptly narrowed to an acute tip, more gradually narrowed and ± cuneate at base, glabrous above, obscurely scurfy-tomentose beneath; fls numerous in an umbel-like infl, rose to white, spotted with yellow or orange within, 3.5–4 cm wide; pedicels and ovary stipitate- glandular; sep oblong to ovate or subrotund, 2–4 mm; fr 10–15 mm. Moist or wet woods, often in dense colonies; N.S. to s. Ont. and O., s. especially in the mts. to Ga. and Ala. June, July.
