Description
Description - Plant short-caulescent; stem ascending. Leaves many; sheaths small, scarcely wider than the blades, brown; blades spreading, curved, linear, attenuate, 3-6 dm long, 20-25 mm wide, green with a broad pale median stripe, glabrous above, sparsely and minutely white-lepidote beneath, sublaxly serrate with flat straight spines 2 mm long. Scape naked short, wholly concealed by the leaf-sheaths. Inflorescence hemispherical, digitate-glomerate, 4-6 cm in diameter; outer bracts subfoliaceous, broad, forming an involucre about the inflorescence and about equaling the flowers, red at base. Floral bracts lanceolate, about equaling the sepals, thickened at apex, entire or obscurely serrulate, red; pedicels short and stout. Sepals free, lanceolate, straight, 22-30 mm long, entire, red, obscurely lepidote; petals 5 cm long, obtuse, bright yellow with a green spot at apex; stamens and style long-exserted; ovary superior. Seeds naked, corrugated, black.
