    Description - A tall, more or less purplish, often robust perennial in large clumps with suberect culms 1 to 2 meters tall, branching after the maturity of the primary panicle ; sheaths mostly sparsely papillose-pilose and with long hairs in the throat; blades flat, mostly 15 to 25 cm. long and 10 to 25 mm. wide (smaller on the branches), velvety beneath: panicles 12 to 25 cm. long, of numerous ascending to spreading, subverticillate racemes 3 to 8 cm. long, the rachis sparsely ciliate. the mauve-purple or tawny, imbricate spikelets 1.7 to 2 mm. long.
