    Description - Inflorescence paniculate, the usually compact, densely flowered panicle composed of 1-sided racemes or of subsimple branches ; spikelets hispid or spiny; glumes usually mucronate ; sterile lemma usually awned ; fruit subindurate, acuminate-pointed, the summit of the palea not inclosed.
