  Description - Inflorescence paniculate (rarely racemose); spikelets pedicellate, biconvex; first glume present ; sterile lemma usually inclosing a hyaline palea, sometimes a staminate flower ; fruit chartaceous-indurate, the margins of the lemma inrolled.
