    Description - An ascending to spreading perennial, in small tufts, the compressed culms 40 to 75 cm. long, the foliage mostly coarsely pubescent, the flat or somewhat revolute blades commonly 8 to 15 cm. long and 5 to 8 mm. wide; racemes solitary, terminal and axillary, 10 to 15 cm. long, erect-arcuate; spikelets in pairs, oblong-elliptic, the first glume usually well developed on the lower of the pair of spikelets, the second glume and sterile lemma firm in texture.
