    Description - A coarse erect annual 35 to 100 cm. or more tall, branching from the base. with coarsely papillose-hirsute foliage, the flat blades 11 to 25 cm. long and 15 to 25 mm. wide, tapering to a rounded base; panicle of 4 to several pale thick ascending racemes, on a narrowly winged axis, the rachis 3 to 4 mm. wide, tapering to a narrow summit, the margins hispidulous; spikelets solitary (or a few paired about the center of the raceme), crowded, oval, turgid, about 3.5 mm. long, blunt, pale, glabrous, the first glume developed as a minute thick bractlet or obsolete, the second glume and sterile lemma subindurate, equal.
