Description
Description - The sapote (to use the correct English name) is a large Central American tree, sometimes attaining 20 meters in height, The leaves, which are clustered toward the ends of the stout branchlets, are obovate to oblanceolate, and 10 to 25 cm. long The small flowers are produced in great numbers along the branchlets. The fruit is elliptic or oval, commonly 7.5 to 15 cm. long, russet-brown, with the skin thick, woody, and scurfy on the surface. The flesh is firm, salmon-red, and finely granular. its flavor is very sweet and, in many varieties, somewhat suggestive of the squash. The seed is large, elliptic, hard, brown, and shining except on the ventral surface, which is whitish and somewhat rough.
