Description
Family Description - Fls perfect, hypogynous, strongly irregular, often bilaterally symmetrical; sep 2, bract-like, often ± peltate, not enclosing the developing buds, commonly caducous; outer pet 2, connivent below, distinct above, one or both spurred or saccate at the base; inner pet 2, slender below, ± dilated at the summit and connivent over the stigma; stamens 6, the elongate filaments connate in 2 sets opposite the outer pet, each set bearing a median bilocular and 2 lateral unilocular anthers, and usually with a nectary-spur at the base of the filaments; ovary of 2 carpels, unilocular, stigma 2-lobed; fr typically a unilocular capsule, dehiscent by partial or complete abscission of 2 elongate valves alternating with the parietal placentas, which form a persistent replum, or sometimes dry and indehiscent; seeds with copious endosperm and small, dicotyledonous embryo, generally arillate; glabrous herbs with alternate, ± dissected lvs, watery juice, and variously cymose to racemose, paniculate, or solitary fls. 19/400.
