    Description - Herbs, mostly erect and branched, the leaves usually dentate, the flowers variously clustered. Calyx tubular, ovoid or campanulate, equally 5-lobed, the lobes acute or aristate. Corolla 2-lipped, the up]. or lip erect or spreading, the lower saccate and drooping. Stamens I, declined, all antheriferous, the filaments distinct, the anthers 2-celled. Ovary 4-carpellary; style basal. Nutlets smooth or rough. [Greek, bent backward.] About 300 species, mostly of tropical America. Type species: Ilyptis verticillata Jacq.
