    Species Description - Bushy-branched, 0.5-1.8 m. high, often forming masses 2 m. in diameter. Joints green, glabrous, mostly obovate and 1-2.5 dm. long, about 8 mm. thick, crenate, the areoles 2-6 cm. apart, somewhat elevated, bearing 1-4, stout yellow spines 1-4 cm. long, or spineless, the numerous glochides yellowish to brownish, 6 mm. long or less; flowers solitary at the areoles, often abundant, bright yellow, about 7.5 cm. broad; ovary obovoid, with gloehide-bearing areoles; petals obovate; stamens much shorter than the petals; fruit pyriform, red or purple, edible, 5-8 cm. long.

    Maritime and coastal rocks, Abaco and Great Bahama to Grand Turk and Inagua : 'Bermuda; Florida: West Indies: eastern coast of Mexico. Recorded by Hitchcock, Coker, Mrs. Northrop and Dolley, as O. Tuna (L.) Mill, and by Schoepf as Cactus Tuna L. Common Prickly-pear.
