    Description - Plants usually small, pale green to bright green, creeping. Branches Lejeunea-type. Stems with hyalodermis; ventral merophyte 2 cells wide; stem in cross section with less than 25 medullary cells. Leaf lobes spreading, apex rounded to acute, plane, margins entire to toothed, dorsal surface occasionally spinose. Cells usually thin-walled with small trigones, cuticle smooth or papillose; oil bodies small, finely granular or homogeneous; ocelli lacking. Lobules ovate, usually less than 1/3 of leaf length, sometimes reduced, apical tooth usually short and blunt, rarely very long, hyaline papilla proximal. Underleaves bifid, rarely undivided, margins entire or with 1—several teeth, insertion line straight to arched. Androecia on short, specialized branches, bracteoles limited to base or present throughout, bracts with hypostatic lobules. Gynoecia on long or short shoots, rarely without innovations or with 1-2 lejeuneoid innovations, sterile or fertile, to ± 3 gynoecia in a row. Perianths with up to 5 keels, smooth or with teeth, cilia, and/or lacinia. Sporophyte lejeuneoid. Vegetative reproduction by caducous leaves, fragmentation, or regenerants on leaf margins.
