Description
Species Description - Thallus (0.5) 1-2 cm wide, to 10 cm long, pure green, dichoto- mously branched. Thallus margins undulate-crispate, thallus surface spotted by whitish dots, midrib lacking. Rhizoids smooth, occasion¬ally with a few tubercles. Antheridial receptacles 0.7-2(2.5) mm wide, 1-4 times longer than wide, orbicular to narrow elongate. Sporophyte seta 0.6-0.9 mm in diameter, composed of 20-25 rows of cells. Sporophyte capsules 5-7 times longer than wide, wall thickening bands ca. 2.5 µm wide (longitudinal section), subvertical in position, and not bulging outward, the radial walls in cross section smooth.

Discussion
Two subspecies are recognized, subsp. gottschei from temperate Chile and Argentina, and subsp. elongata Gradstein & Mues from tropical America. The material from central French Guiana belongs to subsp. elongata.

In submontane cloud forest (Mt. Galbao), 600-700 m, on wet soil and rock.
