  • Description

Species Description - Plants small to medium-sized, in usually green, sometimes golden, extensive, loose mats; stems wiry, radiculose at tips, 2-3 cm long, freely and irregularly branched above sparsely foliate stipe, the branches often branched, slender, attenuate, laxly foliate. Stipe leaves widely spaced, wide-spreading, broadly inserted, ovate, gradually short-acuminate, somewhat decurrent, 0.6-0.8 x 0.2-0.4 mm; margins serrulate almost to base, plane; costa to 1/4-1/3 the leaf length, cells long-hexagonal to linear-oblong, 30-70 x 3-6 µm, sparsely prorulose at upper ends at back, rarely smooth, becoming rectangular towar the insertion; alar cells few, short-rectangular in extreme angles. Stem leaves erect- to wide-spreading, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, grad¬ually short-acuminate, not or scarcely decurrent, 0.45-1.3 x 0.3-0.5 mm; margins serrate to serrulate above, serrulate to denticulate below, mostly plane, sometimes erect; costa unequal, one fork often to 1/4 the leaf length; cells linear, 40-80 x 3-6 µm, sparsely prorulose at upper ends at back, often firm-walled, only becoming shorter at extreme insertion; alar cells very few in 1-4 rows in extreme angles. Branch leaves laxly spaced, erect- to wide-spreading, lanceolate, gradually short-acuminate, not or scarcely decurrent, 0.4-0.95 x 0.2-0.4 mm; margins mostly serrate above, especially in young leaves, serrulate almost to base, mostly plane, sometimes erect, especially at base; costa unequal, one fork sometimes to 1/3 the leaf length; cells long- hexagonal to linear-oblong, 30-80 x 3-6 µm, sparsely but usually conspicuously prorulose at upper ends at back, firm-walled, only becoming shorter at extreme insertion; alar cells quadrate to short- rectangular in 3-5 rows in extreme angles. Autoicous. Setae 1-2 cm long, twisted; capsules 1.2-1.5 mm long.
