    Species Description - Plants medium-sized to robust, yellowish green to reddish brown, in tomentose mats; stems creeping, with numerous erect, usually simple or forked branches. Leaves contorted and often irregularly spirally twisted when dry, linear-lanceolate to Ungulate, short-acuminate or subulate to obtuse-apiculate; margins entire, crenulate to serrate, plane or reflexed or recurved; costa subpercurrent to short-excurrent; cells isodiametric, rectangular-elliptic or elongate, smooth to bulging or papillose; basal cells usually elongate, smooth or tuberculate. Asexual propagula none. Setae elongate, smooth or roughened; capsules long-exserted, ovoid to cylindric, smooth or 8-ribbed; peristome double, single or none, exostome teeth 16, often united in 8 pairs, papillose to papillose-striate; endostome a delicate membrane, rarely with segments. Calyptrae mitrate, lobed at base, covering less than 1/2 of the capsule, less often cucullate, plicate, naked or hairy.
