Description
Species Description - Rhizome-scales abundant, brown, concolorous, lanceolate, 4-6 × 0.7-1 mm, attenuate, denticulate, sparsely fimbriate-ciliate; lvs 5-22 cm; petiole shining brown, articulate below the middle, scaly and hirsute; blade oblong-lanceolate, 2-3.5 cm wide, slightly narrowed below, pinnate- pinnatifid, the rachis hairy and scaly; pinnae 10-16 pairs, firm, narrowly oblong, sessile, dark green, deeply pinnatifid, the (2-)4-7 pairs of segments oblong, rounded, sparingly long-ciliate, the larger ones irregularly lobed, the costae with pale, linear scales and long septate hairs; indusium a minute disk with a marginal fringe of long hairs; 2n=82. Rock-crevices, mostly on acid substrate; circumboreal, s. to B.C., Sask., nw. Io., n. Ill., O., Pa., and in the mts. to N.C. W. ×abbeae Butters is a sterile diploid hybrid with W. oregana.
