Salvinia minima differs from S. auriculata Aublet in having the adaxial surface with numerous conical papillae (2-3 mm long) over the entire surface in rows between the main veins, the papillae with four hairs spreading and free at their tips; sporocarps sessile on unbranched, pendent main axis of fertile leaf; and floating leaves orbicular to slightly oblong, wider than long, 0.6-1.5 cm long, 0.5- 2 cm wide. Salvinia auriculata has the adaxial surface with numerous elongate conical papillae over the entire surface in rows between the main veins, the papillae with four hairs joined together at their tips in a darkened knot; sporocarps pe- dunculate on branched axis, the oldest on longest peduncles; and floating leaves orbicular to orbicular-cordate, wider than long (in the sun), 1.5-2 cm long, 1.8- 2.5 cm wide, notched on both ends (Mickel & Beitel, 1988).
