  • Discussion

Borreria anderssonii Standi., Field Mus. Publ. Bot. 7: 245. 1931.

Standley compared his B. anderssonii with B. laevis (Lam.) Griseb., with which he believed the resemblances were most closely apparent. However, study of B. anderssonii shows that it is most closely related to B. scabiosoides, originally described from the region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Like B. scabiosoides, B. anderssonii is sub-aquatic or inhabits wet places and has a soft rooting stem with lateral branches arising from one side of the stem. The glabrous stems with elongated glabrous stipular sheaths with few bristles are alike in both taxa, and both have narrow elongated, mainly linear leaves. The stipular sheath enveloping the flowering head is likewise conspicuously hispidulous in both taxa. The chief differences between the two taxa are in the greater size of the flowering heads and length of the corolla of B. scabiosoides, as brought out above in the key to varieties.
