Discussion
Spermacoce alata Aubl., Hist. Pl. Guian. 1: 60. pl. 22, fig. 7. 1775.
This species often has been confused with B. latifolia. In Schumann’s key (Mart. FI. Bras. 6(6): 41. 1888) it is placed erroneously under “flores albi,” along with B. latifolia and B. hispida. Actually, so far as known, the flowers of B. alata are blue to purple, in this respect agreeing with B. poaya DC. The flowers are crowded into a dense unilateral head terminating the main stem or lateral branches.
